A New Life for Coal
Bituminous coal makes multifaceted contributions to energy, industry, heating, and manufacturing. At ACWorks, we’re aware of the negative impacts that burning coal can have on the environment and human health. By employing this non-traditional method of processing coal, we transform this great American resource into a high quality and high value product that is used to further clean our air and water supplies.
Our One-of-a-Kind Circular Facility
In our one-of-a-kind manufacturing process, we generate electricity with the volatile gases released during heat treatment of the activated carbon. This powers our entire facility, including our activation kiln, which is typically the most energy intensive process of activated carbon manufacturing. This circular process means we don’t need to rely on natural gas or other external sources of energy to operate our plant. This reduces our greenhouse gas emissions compared to more traditional facilities. We also employ principles to minimize waste generation and energy consumption during the manufacturing process.
Locally Sourced Materials
We chose to locate our facility within close range of the coal mine from which we source our raw materials. This decision allows us to minimize transportation emissions and keeps our supply chain localized. The binders we use in agglomerating the pellets are safe to handle, non-carcinogenic, and 100% sourced in the USA.
Supporting Local Economies
Sustainability isn’t just about the environment, it’s about people too. That’s why social responsibility is one of our core values. Our operations in Inez bring new jobs to Eastern Kentucky, a region whose economy has been severely impacted by the decline of coal mining jobs in recent decades. We want to ensure hard workers can enjoy job security and growth potential.

We believe that business should be a force for good. Our commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and ethical governance is ingrained into our culture. However, we are always eager to improve. We are currently developing a more comprehensive ESG approach so we can continue to understand our impact and think future-forward.
